Education

Shiner Catholic School

St. Ludmila Academy opened its doors in Shiner in 1897 with enrollment of 57 students and a staff of four sisters of Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. Only elementary grades were taught until 1902 when the first two years of high school were added.

In 1928, the four year high school was begun. The school then received the status of academy and by 1929 fully accredited. Since then, there has been considerable expansion curriculum-wise and a marked increase in student and teacher population.

In 1963 St. Paul High School was built and became a parochial high school supported by the parish. St. Paul is a fully accredited high school and offers a well-rounded academic program for both college and vocationally oriented students. In 1987, a name change was made to Shiner Catholic School, St. Ludmila/St. Paul High School.

At our present time we have a student enrollment stands at 266 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten 3 through the twelfth grade. Shiner Catholic School continues to enroll a substantial number of students
from surrounding communities such as Gonzales, Moulton, Flatonia, & Hallettsville. The willingness of people to come from far and wide to attend Shiner Catholic School is a testimony to the quality Catholic Education we are able to provide.

We invite you to browse the website for Shiner Catholic School to learn more about our history and how your children can receive a quality, Catholic education.

L.Y.F.E. Program

The next L.Y.F.E. program will be in June, 2007 and will focus on “The History of Our Parish.”. For more information on the “Generations of Faith” L.Y.F.E. program at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, call 361-594-3836.

L.Y.F.E. is a faith formation program for all generations, for all ages and for all walks of life. At Sts. Cyril & Methodius in Shiner, it is a time to gather as a parish family to share a meal and to learn more about some aspect of the Catholic faith. As the acronym L.Y.F.E. suggests, it is about Living Your Faith Everyday.

L.Y.F.E. made its debut at Sts. Cyril & Methodius in April, 2006 when more than 300 people experienced fellowship and good food, but most of all, they discovered new insights into the meaning of Holy Week. High school youth, volunteer adults and the priests of the parish presented the highlights of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday through prayer, skits and various presentations.

On August 2 and August 6, 2006, parishioners experienced L.Y.F.E. again in preparation for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. After an opening prayer service at the Marian grotto on the church grounds, nearly 200 parishioners gathered in church on the two dates to hear Pastor, Father Bob Knippenberg, deliver a presentation on the theology of the Church’s teaching on the Assumption of Mary.  The key focus of the presentation was reflecting on Mary’s openness to God’s will and her special role in the story of redemption, as the Mother of Jesus, Mother of God, and Mother of the Church. The Church’s teaching on the Assumption celebrates the special privilege given to Mary of the incorruptibility of her body and the dogma that she was taken body and soul into heaven.

Afterward the faithful proceeded to the Parish Hall to enjoy fellowship and lunch. A prayer service was then conducted by L.Y.F.E. committee members using the theme “The Assumption Affirms the Beauty of Creation.  An activity involving all ages from young children to senior citizens gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on various aspects of life in today’s world by identifying positive values and sources of corruption.

An activity involving all ages from young children to senior citizens gave everyone the opportunity to intermingle and work together while reflecting on various aspects of life in today’s world by identifying positive values and sources of corruption as they are depicted in various forms of the media.
